W. A. Mozart once praised the sonatas for piano and harpsichord by Josef Myslivecek (1737–1781) in a letter to his father; he not only played them himself, but also recommended that his sister learn them by heart. The collection of six already known sonatas is enriched by the one-movement Sonata in C major, a copy of which has so far been preserved in the archives of the Benedictine monastery of San Pietro in Perugia.
The sonatas are suitable both as concert literature and for teaching purposes, as they represent an ideal introduction to the classical period. Until now, there has been no edition that has taken all available sources into account. Vojtech Spurný, the editor of this Urtext edition who is a pianist, conductor and specialist in historical performance practice, relied on a copy of the sonatas from the Bavarian State Library in Munich as his main source.
